Pursuer
Individual, firm or company who raises an action, making a claim, whether financial or otherwise, against another party.

Defender
Party against whom such a claim is made.

Initial Writ
Document of which sets out the basis of the Pursuer's claim and commences the action.

Arrestment
Procedure which enables the Defender's Bank Account to be frozen and any funds owed to the Defender, held in a third party's hands, also to be frozen. Also extends to a proportion of the Defender's earnings (after final Decree has been granted).

Inhibition
An order against the Defender preventing him disposing of heritable property in his name.

Caveat
Document lodged in Court, to provide advance notice of an application for a winding up order or interim interdict.
